rum, coconut and honey (with added raisins)

May 26th, 2011

I’ve been on a bit of a baking spree lately and spent the evening doing just that. I was so proud of the result I just had to post it!

The cake was met with satisfied murmurs from my family, and only half the cake remains, so I’m happy.

Off to bed with a full and happy belly.

addicted

May 24th, 2011

What constitutes an addiction?

Is it that initial rush at just the thought of it? And now it’s in your mind, you have to have it? Is it the desire – almost like a horrendously burning itch that just needs to be scratched?

Is it the constant and incessant rationalising of your actions every time you indulge to persuade yourself – and everyone around you – that it’s absolutely desperately needed? That you simply have to have it. Without question. Like water. Like air.

Is it that feeling of absolute euphoria the minute you get your fix? The rush that sends you so deliriously happy that you’re dizzy and flushed with the ecstasy? Is it when your heart races at what feels like a hundred-thousand-beats per minute as soon as you have what you desire…?

And then it’s gone.

And then you need it again.

You lose sleep over it. You dream about it. You conjure up crafty plans and muse over every conceivable way by which you can obtain it.

The mere thought of it can have you salivating. As though you’ve been presented with a mouthwatering meal and you haven’t eaten for days. And you can’t think about anything until you have it. And if you can’t have it, it’s like a hunger, a starvation. Ravenous. A hollow pain in your stomach like an echo of a punch. And it doesn’t go.

It doesn’t fade..but it can be replaced by something else. Something even better and you can’t shake it. You have to have it. Being without it is painful. The feeling of famine needs to be fed. And when it’s not, you can’t stop thinking about it. It can make you delirious. Climbing walls. Clenching teeth. Scratching at skin. It’s everywhere. You can’t escape it because something inside you seeks it out. Like a starving wild animal stalking its prey, foaming at the mouth.

And if you dare to have the mere thought of the sheer bliss you can experience when you finally get it: that ultimate moment that causes colours to explode in your mind and a tuneful melody to drown you and block out everything but you and it.

The choice, the  vivid blur of colours that sends the room spinning, the smells, the luxury, the textures, the crisp sound of the tissue paper as it’s unfolded in the box, the smile of the assistant, the feel of the plastic, the soft cotton that slides so easily into the sharp paper bag, the touch of the soft leather as it slides onto your foot, excitedly peering into the closed packaging on the way home, peeling of the label when it’s finally yours. The feeling that, for just that moment, everything will be alright. Because it has to be.

But surely that’s not an addiction, right?

Doesn’t everyone feel like that about shopping?

she runs the world

May 19th, 2011

Just when you thought she was taking a break – BAM!

This woman is an inspiration. And she looks Uh-may-zing. I want all of those outfits.

Credit is due to the video’s genius stylist, Ty Hunter who has Bey in what appears to be every single designer’s looks literally pulled straight off the runway in their entirety. Among the yellow Pucci, and the necessary nod to the late McQueen in the red/gold couture combo, my favourites are the Norma Kamali fringed shorts, white Givenchy SS11 Haute Couture by Ricardo Tiscci gown, the full length all black Givency S&M esque ’10′-piece and the amazing Lariucci jewels (esp those gold claws! Hello Ma’am!).

And of course, those shoes. Anyone who knows me will know about my shoe obsession (my job even revolves around shoes) and I am desperately in love with those much coveted gold Gareth Pugh Starship Enterprise bad boys: gold mirrors, edges that draw blood and insanse heels – what else could you possibly want from a piece of a footwear? Undoubtedly the shining gold star of the show (after Beyonce of course).

…oh, and the song’s good too.

cruise control

May 18th, 2011

I was seething with jealousy after seeing the photos of the glitterati at Karl Lagerfeld’s for Chanel 2012 cruise collection and dinner at the Hotel du Cap (probably the most expensive and exclusive hotel in the world) in Antibes on the French Riviera last Monday.

Forget the collection, my continuing girl crush Blake ‘Legs’ Lively (Karl’s latest muse), Rachel Blison and Clemece Poesy looked hot to trot in Chanel couture pieces. I’m allergic to Alexa Chung so you’ll have to go to some other blog to see pics of her.

les twins

May 18th, 2011

I’m ashamed to say I only came across this hip hop dance duo just this week.  The 22 year old identical twins Larry and Laurent from Sarcelles, Val d’Oise, France are absolutely out of this world.  I’ve never seen anything like it. They mix all their own music and also, they have 18 siblings (random fact. God bless Wikipedia).

I can so see them in an ID Magazine shoot. They’ve already worked with Rocawear and Adidas and they’re soon to be featured in Beyonce’s upcoming video so watch this space: I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot more of them. Uh-may-zing.

PS: I also love the fact that they’re French and not from America. It’s a nice change that makes me happy. They can’t claim everything over there!!

Coz women are so much prettier than men. And because everything was more glamorous before the MTV era.

Perfection is: the new YSL Palais metallic slingbacks I spied on Net-a-Porter this week. I am in love.

Simple, elegant, timeless – and they actually also look really comfortable. They’ve done so many designs on that last including my last season fave, the Palais Mohawk.

They cost almost 6 bills though, so donations are welcome. Thanks in advance guys.

I just love the whole nineties supermodel look she has going on…

And now the knockout 22 year old Puerto-Rican, who was diagnosed with scoliosis, a medical condition causing curvature of the spine,  has appeared in Italian, French, German & American Vogues and featured in Stella McCartney, Roberto Cavalli and Gucci’s SS11 campaigns and is also the new face of Estée Lauder.

And she has a bum.

Love her.
