it sparkles and it shines and it’s like silk

Apologies for being AWOL on the blogging front. Firstly, I broke my laptop and secondly I landed a fantasticly fabulous new job and just have started so have been absolutely swept off my feet and haven’t had a minute to think – let alone blog!

Anyway, this is kind of a lazy post, but my friend A alerted me to the fact that I have not continued my Florentine Fashion series…so here’s some more for ya…

Enjoy

viva l’italia

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

So I’ve been AWOL for a while, reason being, I’ve actually have been stranded in Florence – not that that’s a bad thing.

I stayed with my fabulous friend Genevieve, who I met at NY Fashion week when she was working in PR, about 2 years ago – and I haven’t seen her since I left. So when she emailed to tell me she was in Italy for 4 months, I couldn’t book my ticket fast enough!

I was only supposed to be there for a few days, but thanks to the volcanic activity, the length of my holiday was doubled and we spent the entire time lazing/walking around in the sun, shopping, eating, drinking Sangria, partying, eating, eating, eating…. I’m sure I have gained about a stone.

I restrained myself from going mad in the shops, but I did get a couple of bits and visited some fantastic vintage stores and took some sneaky snaps. They were like little treasure chests found just off the beaten track. Gorgeous designer vintage boutiques as well as dusty cramped rooms packed to the rafters with Mama’s treasures. Anyway, I’ve rambled on long enough.

Going to phase out the photos for you. And today, it’s vintage shoes, Florentine style. Enjoy!

spaced out

Been one of those evenings where I’m so tired but can’t actually sleep. And don’t. And then become un-tired*. So un-tired that I can’t sleep, and a vicious cycle occurs. And I really had to note down these random musings of mine before I forgot them and passed out drooling over my laptop.

1. Is it strange that I want to replace my wardrobe for clothing rails? have thought this for a year or so now. Gonna order one from ikea right this second (or remove my mother’s evening dresses from the rail in the guest room and steal that one instead..but that one is white…I want a silver one).

2. I have just decided that my new style/lady crush is Shala Monroque. If you don’t know, google.

3. I wish I could read Japanese so I could read Vogue Nippon online. My internet translator thingy is so slow. Hang on, my brother does…although I doubt he’ll be willing to oblige to weekly vogue readings.

4. I have discovered 3 of the tops I bought in the American Apparel rummage have holes in. Oh well, strategic positioning/creating extra holes will solve that problem in no time. They collectively cost about 14 quid so I shan’t complain.

5. I need more oversized gemmy* (*I know these are not real words) cocktail rings – preferably those YSL ones Rumi Neely has. Aww, she has everything I want! I also rreaaaallly want that Alexander McQueen knuckleduster and the matching bag. Damn it!

6. I am in the wrong city.

7. Something is attempting to break through from under my skin and surface in the middle of my forehead. I will not call it a spot as I do not wish to tempt fate. It must be some kind of ladybird or a drawing pin under there.

8. I have a sore throat. I need a Strepsil but I only have Fox’s mints to hand. So far, as expected, they’re not working.

9. I need more shoes in my life. Want some fluffy ones. Louboutins preferably. I have decided that this is year of the shoe.

10. I really need to start washing my vintage before putting them in my wardrobe. The attic smell is starting to offend neighbouring  clothes and they’re going to start to complain soon.

11. A cushion just fell on the floor. I think I have too many cushions and pillows on my bed. Brings to minds that scene in that Jennifer Anniston/Ben Stiller movie where she makes him stab the unecessary pillows. I forget which one. If you’ve seen it, you’ll know which I mean. Is 8 too many?

12. That reminds me, I need to see that Tom Ford movie before it finishes.

13. I have just realised Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason has been repeated on my dvd player 4 times. I’m not even watching it.

Bloody Hell. What time is it??!! OK. Bedtime.

Disclaimer: please be aware that it is late, I am tired and therefore the above probably makes little sense. But it is, after all, my blog and I will write what I please.

all in the name of fashion

Gosh, so I went to the American Apparel rummage sale yesterday. Well, I travelled there. In the rain and wind and my poor hair suffered because of it. But I soldiered on. The intention was supposed to be for me to wake up at 8 am, grab my sleepy-eyed friend Sarah on the way and get there for 10 – but, obviously, these things only work in theory. I got there at 1 – minus Sarah.

I wandered down a jam packed Brick Lane, getting distracted by vintage stores, and spying lots of American Apparel shopping bags, I knew I was close – I could almost smell the tri-blend – only to get there and discover that the sale was shut down by Police. I did check in the morning, but I thought that it would have been reinstated in the afternoon after removing the offending shopaholics from the queue, but I was sadly mistaken. Me and a few other anxious bargain hunters congregated around the warehouse doors awaiting updates, but we were met with sad news – although it was bitter sweet as we were all given a 40% discount in store. Oh well, they’ve extended the sale so I’ll try again on Monday.  Also, much to my amusement, the riot was on bbc news. Crazed bargain hunters – if you don’t believe me, check out the video below. 3 arrests & 10 police injured. A riot. all in the name of fashion. Ri-donkulous.

Had a productive day otherwise, though. I spent all day (9 hours to be precise) shopping and got some lovely bits; my legs did feel as though they were going to buckle and I didn’t eat, drink or go to the toilet all day  (I’ve always maintained that when shopping, you have to ‘earn’ such luxuries).

I spent ages in Hunky Dory vintage on Brick Lane, which is a treat of a store, and not overpriced like most of the others on the street. The guys in there were so friendly and complimentary and I was loving the Motown classics blasted through an old jukebox. Was also highly amused that the changing room was literally a curtain under the stairs! Got a  tiny (no carbs to be consumed 24hrs before wearing) but gorgeous lace & glass-beaded skirt (it weighs a ton!) from there which I’m mucho happy with. I’ve taken some snaps of the store for you, and of my fabulous skirt (that I have named Clarissa) that I got to take home.

I’ve been searching for a turban for about 2 years now, (not Sikh style, more 1950s Dior style) and have come to the realisation that I’ll just have to make one myself. So I hit up a fabric store and went a bit mad buying reams of fabric (below) for my turbans that I will attempt this week.  It took me back actually, I haven’t been to a fabric store for about a year and a half, and it brought back memories of racing around Fashion Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, sneaking my scissors in my bag and snipping off swatches in darkened corners. For my turban I’m going to rummage about the house for a brooch to stick in the middle of it. So excited. yay! My friends, and particularly my brother laugh at  the idea of me in a turban,  but I’ve learned to take no notice of their bewilderment. I would really love that vintage 1950s Christian Dior turban, but will have to make do with my homemade one. Mum used to wear them so I’ve informed her she will be helping me, much to her amusement/dread.

I also made my way West later and Also got some cutie see through & spotted ankle sockies in nude and black from H&M which will go fabulously with those amazing wedges I bought the other day. And stocked up on some vests and a cashmere-wool dress in from Topshop boutique. I had a nude one which I loved which actually went missing. Very sad. I must look for that actually.

Anyway, off out now. Got to allow myself 2hrs to stick my hair in rollers…

Ciao
